Barnesville Hospital Awarded CMS Five-Star Quality Rating

Barnesville Hospital has been given a five-star rating by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which is the highest rating given. Hospitals report data about common conditions like heart attacks or pneumonia to CMS. Medicare summarizes up to 57 quality measures in determining the rating. This overall rating shows how well each hospital performed, on average, compared to other U.S. hospitals.

CMS created the Five-Star Quality Rating System to help consumers compare healthcare facilities. The most common rating is 3 stars. The more stars, the better. Consumers can go on the Hospital Compare website, where there is also information about infection rates and patient satisfaction. Nationally, only 7.36 percent of eligible Medicare-certified hospitals have earned this distinction.

CMS analyzes hospitals using data on outcomes, patient experience and other factors for its Hospital Compare online database to give patients and their families another tool to make informed health care choices. CMS began providing star ratings for hospitals in 2016 to help consumers make more informed decisions about where to access health care. The ratings use broad categories of information, including outcomes, patient experience, access and process to determine how well hospitals perform.
