Wanting to be somewhere he could be part of a community and make a difference made the decision to come to Barnesville an easy one for Dr. Abhishek Shahi. Recently joining the Medical Staff at Barnesville Hospital, Abhishek Shahi, M.D. is anxious to begin providing primary care services to residents of Barnesville and the surrounding areas. The Barnesville community reminds Dr. Shahi of his birthplace. Born in a small town in India, both parents come from agricultural families. His father is an engineer in the coal mining industry and his mother is a school teacher.
Having a strong passion to take care of people and their families, Dr. Shahi began his medical career by attending Kasturba Medical College at Manipal University, one of the Top 5 medical colleges in India. Coming to Harvard Medical School, he did research on the biomarkers of acute kidney injury and completed a residency at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, Massachusetts Medical Society, and the Belmont County Medical Society.
When asked his most gratifying healthcare experience, Dr. Shahi recounts an episode with a patient admitted to the hospital with an acute episode of agitation and confusion. After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Shahi was able to identify the underlying medical cause, returning the gentleman to his baseline mental status. That day, states Dr. Shahi, I realized that it is the primary care physician who knows the patient. Its best if the primary care physician can take care of patients in the hospital, which is opposite the trend in most metro hospitals.
Dr. Shahi married wife, Anulika, while doing his internship and they are the parents of a 6-month old daughter, Aaryana. Dr. Shahi enjoys traveling and photographing wildlife and landscapes. He has a strong interest in volunteering for social causes.
Dr. Shahi is located in Suite 202 at the Barnesville Medical Center and can be reached at 740-425-5140.
