Barnesville Hospital Offers Expanded Hours for MRI Services

Barnesville Hospital has been providing the services of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to patients for a number of years; however in order to better meet the needs of the community and physicians, effective June 23rd, the hours of those services are being expanded to the following:

  • Monday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Last Saturday of each month: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, is a noninvasive way of seeing inside the body in order to examine organs, tissues, and the skeletal system. MRI does not rely on the type of radiation used for an x-ray or computed tomography (CT) scan. The MRI examination requires specialized equipment to create very clear pictures of internal body structures, as well as 3-D images that may be viewed from many different angles. When you lie inside an MRI scanner, the magnetic field temporarily realigns hydrogen atoms in your body. Radio waves cause these aligned atoms to produce very faint signals, which are used to create cross-sectional MRI images like slices in a loaf of bread.

MRI scanners are generally large, tube-shaped magnets. Barnesville Hospital utilizes a mobile MRI service called InSight. MRI scanners placed in mobile trailers are technologically identical to the respective scanners used at fixed sites. With strict quality control measures in place and an experienced crew, the image quality of scans taken in mobile units appears to be no different than that of the scans taken at a fixed site.

Interpretation of all examinations is provided by Radiology Associates Inc., a 13-person radiology group that provides diagnostic and radiology services at Barnesville Hospital, Wheeling Hospital, Belmont Community Hospital, Wetzel County Hospital, Reynolds Memorial Hospital and Weirton Medical Center.

All of the physicians of Radiology Associates are board certified in the specialty of radiology. Its members have subspecialty training in: Womens Imaging (including mammography), Neuroradiology, Musculoskeletal Radiology, Interventional Radiology, MRI, and Body Imaging.
