With the introduction of the McKesson Patient Portal, Barnesville Hospitals patients have the opportunity to get more involved in their own medical care. Through the addition of the new, free service from Relay Health, Barnesville Hospital inpatients, as well as outpatients, have convenient 24-hour access to personal health information from anywhere with an Internet connection. In addition to the patient, it is beneficial to the family because it allows information to be shared accurately and efficiently, at the patients discretion.

Many laboratory and diagnostic imaging results can be viewed online within hours after being performed. Patients have the ability to review and edit portions of their electronic health record, such as medical history, medication records, allergies, or immunizations. According to Peggy Douglass, MS, RNC, Director of Education & Outreach at Barnesville Hospital, Patients can access their health records from their living rooms, allowing them to become very involved in their care and encouraging patient compliance.

Staff at Barnesville Hospital understand and respect patient privacy. This online access is made available through a secure patient portal which has privacy and security safeguards in place to protect the health information. The portal is hosted on a secure connection and accessed through a password-protected login. The service creates an audit trail for tracking who has accessed information, what changes were made, and when.

Accessing the Patient Portal is quick and easy. At the point of registration, patients will be asked for an e-mail address. The e-mail address will be kept secure and only used by Barnesville Hospital for this service. After discharge, patients will receive an e-mail invitation to register. The e-mail will provide a link with temporary username and password. To ensure security, Relay Health must accept a registration before a patient can use the service. The initial registration can take 24 hours for processing.
